Repentigny is Montreal’s off-island suburb, situated in the province of Quebec, north of Montreal. The settlement can be found on the Saint Lawrence River and on the lower end of the Rivière des Prairies, too. Population of Repentigny is a bit over 75,000 people, and the city’s current mayor is Chantal Deschamps, first elected in 1997 and has been re-elected a number of times. Repentigny was founded back in the early 1670s by the son of Seigneur Pierre Le Gardeur – Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur. Seven years after the foundation, the settlement only had thirty inhabitants.

First two and a half centuries, the city was inhabited by just several hundred peasants, being an ordinary agricultural community. The first mayor of Repentigny became Benjamin Moreau in 1855. The city merged with its neighbour Le Gardeur back in 2002, increasing its area from 29 to 69 sq. km and the population – by 70%. Today the city is the central point for transit within South-Central Lanaudière. Repentigny’s North-Eastern Shore Transit Exchange Centre, governed by Agencemétropolitaine de transport, is considered as the largest transit infrastructure in the entire region. It differs from a regular bus terminal by the fact that no departures are available from there, only transfers from one district to the other.

90% of MRC L'Assomption transit system circuits go through Exchange Centre, as well as 2 CRTL regional lines. They provide Repentigny with a direct connection to multiple cities and regions, including Montreal, Montréal-Est, Sainte-Geneviève-de-Berthier, Crabtree, and Joliette. In addition, Repentigny participates in the L'Assomption MRC public transportation network, as well as in the pan-regional Lanaudière Regional Transport Commission. This means that the city is connected to all of the Regional County Municipalities of Lanaudière.

The City of Repentigny is proud of its culture, being a birth-place for a Québécois folk-pop band, Les Cowboys Fringants; a hockey player for the Buffalo Sabres, Jason Pominville; and a hockey goalie for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Pascal Leclaire. Besides, the city hosts numerous festivals and events, including Festival Gospel in the middle of August; Fête du Petit-Village, which is a little town festival held every two autumns; a winter event Festival de Feuet de Glace, held in the beginning of the year, and Youth Theatre festival in the beginning of July.

In addition, International Volleyball event is held in Repentigny each late July, followed in the beginning of August by Summer Rendez-Vous, which is a theme park featuring rock shows and familial activities. Then, 18-level national soccer festival called Soccer Nationals is held in the middle of August, and National Bank Junior Tennis Internationals of the country in either end of August or beginning of September. Finally, the City of Repentigny features multiple movie projections and outdoor shows, including the Fête Nationale du Québec, which usually involves numerous activities like shows and live concerts in Parc St-Laurent.
